Kjerrahvalen was designed by Trond Fredriksen and built in collaboration with the Kjerra Fossepark Foundation. The kiln stands as a monumental sculptural work with practical utility just a few meters from the Lågen River in Kjærra Fossepark. It is Norway’s largest anagama kiln, the largest in Scandinavia, and the tallest in Northern Europe.

Firings are held annually during summer, from late June to mid-July. The kiln has a capacity of 21 cubic meters and can accommodate sculptures up to 2.4 meters tall. Kjerrahvalen is publicly owned and available for use by everyone, making it one of the few kilns accessible to the general public.
